SUMMARY
This issue of Międzynarodowy Przegląd Polityczny has been complied first and foremost to acquaint our readers with the 2004 Index of Economic Freedom recently published by the Heritage Foundation and the Wall Street Journal. We also present the full text of President George W. Bush`s January State of the Union Address, along with Daniel J. Mitchell`s thoughts on tax harmonization. In our section on European matters we provide a bloc of materials focusing on Spain (vide: the commentary by Newsweek Polska`s Marek Magierowski), the Pacto de Toledo, the economic program of the Partido Popular announced by Mariano Rajoy, and the CDU`s recently approved plan for the overhaul of Germany`s social policy. Thereafter Maciej Reluga (chief economist at the Allied Irish Bank Group) detailedly reports on the issues surrounding Ireland`s reforms in the realm of public finance, and Dick Roche (Ireland`s Minister for European Affairs) writes on the European Union`s impact on the Emerald Isle. Międzynarodowy Przegląd Polityczny`s sixth issue also presents the views of the American Stratfor group concerning the plans to cut the EU`s budget, together with the analyses of several Polish think tanks. This issue also includes several important book reviews (T.H. Eriksen`s Tyranny of the Moment, and F. Zakaria`s The Future of Freedom). In our Varia section we recommend an essay on the political changes underway in Pakistan. |
